A project of Associação Brasileira de Informática - ABINFO
Having a place to develop our ideas or spend some enjoyable hours doing creative activity is the wish of many of us.
For this we reserve a corner of our houses that we call a workshop or atelier. This place beyond space, contains the necessary tools for our activity.
Some people need a place to carry out a small business activity, from a maintenance workshop to the creation of new product prototypes or adaptations.
Or a teacher or group of teachers with limited resources wants to equip their school or university with a laboratory that makes it possible to carry out practical teaching or research work.
Others may want to participate in initiatives that target cooperative studies or work on the Internet, such as open laboratories to raise levels of pollution in the world or provide education or assistance in remote locations and need the means to contribute.
A laboratory is an environment that makes it possible to achieve a project.
The lab can be a simple table with a few tools and instruments, a small workshop, or a more complete set of equipments. It can start with a desk and grow up to a more complex set of capabilities.
A laboratory also needs a workshop in which parts and even special apparatuses and instruments can be built. A laboratory without an associated workshop is very limited in what it can produce.
This project aims to maintain a place on the Internet where there is information on how to implement such laboratory and its workshop, its tools and methods with minimum amount of money and good quality.
People working in organizations with significant purchasing power, such as a university or company can draw inspiration from the concepts contained herein to start a research or development of a new product with economy, efficiency and effectiveness.
We give importance to the ability to "do it yourself," as this can lead to some money savings, and often time, when you need to wait a long time to go through a bureaucratic purchase process or get funds for the purchase. These are bottlenecks that slow down innovation processes and may hinder the success of an innovation effort.
How to achieve quality with little money? The content of this site is inspired by the concept of quality sufficient for the purpose for which it is intended, that is, the result of the works to be developed. The design, sizing and construction requirements of a satellite are very different, as are a model airplane, a simple robot model or an innovative object whose functionality we want to demonstrate.
We express this concept with the phrase "good enough".
Although at first glance this concept may lead us to think that it implies less rigor or care in carrying out the works, on the contrary, it requires greater attention, discipline and creativity.
There are a large number of contributions made by generous and good will people on the Internet who teach countless techniques, show how to build tools, make software and courses available, network people and groups for useful results locally or globally.
We want to contribute to this effort not only by adding knowledge and by exposing our experience in organizing a small workshop and laboratory and, as far as possible, to provide connections to that rich Internet knowledge content.
